The Chinese capital witnessed a shopping bonanza this May Day holiday, as 60 key shopping areas across the city attracted more than 35 million visits and 9.92 billion yuan (US$1.37 billion) in revenue.
In particular, Wudaokou, Zhongguancun, and Wangjing shopping areas saw sales growths of 130%, 110%, and 76.9%, respectively, during the five-day holiday period.
Shopping malls across the city went to extraordinary lengths to attract consumers. Hops on Beijing, a mega shopping complex in northern Beijing's Changping district, unveiled the city's deepest diving pool and Asia's second-largest dome screen, attracting over 900,000 visitors.
The food and beverage sector was a highlight during the holiday. The city held a craft beer festival, with 135 craft beer stores offering discounts to attract more consumers, while Chaoyang, Tongzhou, and Shijingshan districts rolled out various activities to enrich people's dining experiences.
Data shows that the city's 127 major department stores, supermarkets, franchises, restaurants, and e-commerce businesses grossed 4.99 billion yuan in sales during the holiday.
