With only one teacher, twenty-one students and three classrooms, Dalishan elementary school, located on a mountain which is more than 600 meters above sea level, is the smallest school in Longyou county of East China's Zhejiang province.

Liao Meixiang, the only teacher and headmistress of the school, is used to putting all the students, ranging from 4 to 12 years old, in one classroom and teaching them according to their curriculums since she came here to work in Feb, 1984.

Liao said the school enrolls students every two years since too few students come. But it's comforting that the students study hard, though most of them are left-over children.

Extreme weather and poor family conditions do not deter the students, who demonstrate a passion for their studies and dream of making it outside the mountain.

The other staff member, also surnamed Liao, is a guard, chef and cleaner at the school. Though he is more than sixty years old, he says he will work as long as possible.
