After a 42-hour painstaking rescue effort, a six-year-old boy's body was found at 11:30 a.m. yesterday at a sewage treatment plant after he fell into an uncovered construction site manhole in Zhengzhou in central China's Henan Province, according to a local news website.

The boy, nicknamed Dabao, was reported missing after he plunged into a manhole around 5:00 p.m. on April 11. A five-year-old girl who witnessed the accident said the manhole was covered by a dusty white cloth and the boy fell and landed in the fast-flowing water.

His parents and other family members were filled with anxiety and sorrow. The boy's uncle said that he was hoping for a miracle.

Emergency personnel attempted a rescue, with fully-equipped divers descending into the sewers to search for the boy. However, there was no miracle. At 11:30 a.m. yesterday, the boy's drowned body was recovered.

The boy's parents said,"We cannot accept the fact that our child has already died."

After hearing the news of the boy's death, many Internet users wondered why the manhole was left uncovered and said that the local government should enhance supervision over the safety of the construction site and other city maintenance.
