A man who murdered six people in a six-hour killing spree has been sentenced to death, the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court announced yesterday.

The victims of Fan Jieming, 63, included four colleagues, a soldier on sentry duty and an unlicensed taxi driver killed as Fan hijacked his car. Four people were also injured.

He was found guilty of murder, robbery, stealing guns and illegally possessing guns and ammunition.

Fan was a senior worker at Shanghai Guangyu Fine Chemicals Co in Baoshan District. Operations ceased in May 2013, and Fan is said to have become embroiled in a dispute with colleagues about dividing up equipment.

On June 22, accompanied by his son, Fan climbed a wall to get into Guangyu. After luring colleague Zhang Yunfeng to a parts warehouse, he threw acid on him and Zhang was then beaten to death with an iron bar.

Taking a hunting rifle and bullets from his dormitory on the site, Fan told his son to go home and fled the scene in an unlicensed cab.

On the journey, Fan decided to hijack the car and shot dead driver Bian Shijie during a struggle.

Having killed two people, Fan decided that it didn't matter to him if he killed more, so drove the taxi back to the company to hunt down colleagues he bore grudges against, the court heard.

On the way, he passed a military barracks and shot two guards, killing one, Kong Bo, and injuring the other, and stole an automatic rifle.

At the factory gate, Fan saw owner Li Zhizhong and a colleague, Wang Ronghai, standing there and shot them dead.

Fan then entered the factory seeking two other men with whom he did not get along.

While searching for them he shot dead colleague Xia Huanhuan in the security guard room and injured another.

Another colleague was also injured at this time.

The killing spree came to an end when Fan was overpowered by police. One officer was shot in his knee during the struggle.

Police recovered several guns and ammunition among Fan's possessions.

Fan's son He Hefeng, who was accused of helping his father kill Zhang Yunfeng, stood trial for murder in June 2014. No verdict has yet been announced.
