Editor's note:

Echoing China's recently-issued Thirteenth Five Year Plan (2016-2020) to boost the country's teaching quality and innovation, the State Council, China's cabinet, has made a three-step program to build a host of top-notch universities based on an innovation-driven development strategy by 2020. Will the dream come true?

A roller coaster year of drama, corruption and plagiarism happened at Chinese universities in 2015 and sparked some of China's fiercest debates over the nation's "ivory towers."

Ex-Olympian Deng Yaping's appointment stirs debate

The appointment of a former Olympic table tennis champion as an adjunct professor at a Chinese university is stirring up controversy.

This is because of questions surrounding Deng Yaping's appointment and academic qualifications for the job at the China University of Political Science and Law.

An undergrad at the university is calling on school authorities to disclose their decision-making process, arguing an academic board should have been convened publicly to vote.

Another professor at the University has also quit in protest of Deng's appointment.
