Historically, Nanxiong was a marketplace and the central point in the exchange of goods and cultures between central China and the outpost Guangdong. Some 1,100 years ago, people from China's Henan and Shanxi moved through Meiling Ancient Road to settle down here, hence the name "No. 1 neighborhood of Guangdong."

Zhuji Lane is 1,500 meters long and 4 meters wide. As many as 179 Chinese clans used to live here. The descendants of Zhuji Ancient Lane now live around the world.

Nowadays, more than 300 families still live here. Walking along the cobblestone lane, in addition to ancient buildings and ruins, there are also shops and newly built ancestral halls connected with each other. There are also bridges, ponds and rivers.

People from north-central China with their well-maintained language and customs lived harmoniously with local people and helped to spread the more advanced Central Plain culture and production techniques to the then relatively uninhabited southern frontier. There is a Zhuji Road in Guangzhou City which was named to commemorate many of the city's residents' place of origin.
