A court in northeast China's Liaoning Province Friday sentenced Liang Bin, a former senior official in Hebei Province, to eight years in prison for taking bribes.

Liang will have personal property worth 500,000 yuan (72,000 U.S. dollars) confiscated, according to Anshan City Intermediate People's Court.

From 2004 to 2014, Liang took bribes of cash and goods worth a total of 5.58 million yuan when he was vice governor of Shanxi Province and a member of the standing committee of CPC Shanxi provincial committee, and former member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Hebei provincial committee, the court said.

He helped individuals in real estate development, promotions and other issues, and his acts constituted a crime, said the court.

According to the court, Liang repented, confessed and returned his illegal gains "in an active manner," as well as provided evidence for the crimes of others, all of which are grounds for leniency.
