Infectious diseases kill 1,880 in China in December 2016

A total of 1,880 people died as a result of infectious diseases on the Chinese mainland in December, official data showed Wednesday.

According to the National Health and Family Planning Commission, there were 582,717 cases of infectious diseases reported on the mainland last month.

More than 281,544 cases were classified as Class B infectious diseases under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, and they resulted in 1,864 deaths.

Viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhoea and scarlatina accounted for 93 percent of cases in this category.

Category C diseases were responsible for 301,173 cases, and 16 deaths. Foot and mouth disease, infectious diarrhea and influenza were the most prevalent in this category, accounting for 93 percent of cases in this category.
