A China Eastern Airlines’ flight from London to Shanghai Pudong was diverted to a Russian airport yesterday due to an engine failure.

Flight MU552 which took off from London Heathrow at 9:02 pm local time was diverted to Yemelyanovo International Airport about 11am local time.

A spokeswoman at the Russian airport said the Airbus 330 landed smoothly and safely, with 186 passengers and 17 crew aboard.

The Shanghai-based carrier sent another plane to transport the passengers, the airline said in a statement. An airline official said the captain noticed the right engine was unstable and requested the diversion.
