After two years of construction, the largest sewage treatment plant in Beijing’s sub-district Tongzhou completed renovation and is about to start a trial operation.

The Bishui plant, built on the basis of the old plant in 2005, adopts a fully enclosed sunken treatment system, hiding under wetlands, gardens and artificial rivers. The renovation will increase the plant’s daily processing capacity from 100,000 tons to 180,000 tons while saving 230 acres of land at the same time.

The new plant is three stories underground, whose vertical structure help save more than 60% of the land.

The project is one of the most difficult among similar water recycling plants, as it needs to build a cofferdam to separate the old plant from the new one. But with joint effort of the engineers and workers, the plant is completed in short time and meets Beijing’s highest standard for construction projects.

A fenceless leisure park will be built above the plant and open to the public.
