Major public institutions in Beijing will launch waste sorting this year, and by 2020, the Chinese capital will achieve a full coverage of the waste-sorting system in its core area.

Waste sorting system has been implemented in many communities in Beijing. On-site treatment of kitchen wastes has been introduced to a community in Xicheng District of Beijing. Through these machines, kitchen wastes could turn into organic fertilizer. Green living rooms have also been set up in these communities, which aim at raising residents’ awareness of waste sorting.

The widespread implementation of waste sorting system is essential in improving the living environment of the public and disposing garbage into resources in a harmless way. By 2020, the city aims to basically establish the system of throwing, collecting, transporting and disposing recyclable wastes, kitchen wastes and other wastes, and develop the public’s habit of sorting wastes. In 2017, at least one street in each district and one community in the remaining streets shall start building waste sorting demonstration areas, which will be connected and expanded to realize a full coverage in core areas in 2020.

Besides, in order to promote waste sorting, major public institutions like government’s offices, schools and hospitals in Beijing will play a leading role, and large shopping malls, hotels and catering enterprises will be encouraged to take the lead.
