Caofeidian, an economic zone in north China's Hebei Province, now shoulders the major responsibility in relieving Beijing of its non-essential capital city functions, with more industries being transferred there.

By the end of last year, a total of 65 projects have started construction in Caofeidian to accelerate the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration, among which 54 were from Beijing-based companies, totaling a whopping 173.08 billion yuan (US$25.16 billion).

The economic zone near the Bohai Sea is home to an import terminal that provides Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Beijing over the winter heating season.

The seawater desalination project in Caofeidian can now meet the production need of Shougang Group, one of the country's largest steel companies, with a daily processing capacity of 50,000 tons. The second phase of the project is expected to come into service in late 2018 to provide fresh water for Beijing.

Beijing's medical and education resources are also gradually shifting to the zone to balance regional development as more top-flight hospitals and schools have set up branches or subsidiaries there.

Exchanges in government leaders between the capital and the port in Hebei have become more frequent to synergize efforts for regional integration.
