Former senior official sentenced to 3.5 years for graft

Zheng Yuzhuo, a former senior legislator in northeast China's Liaoning Province, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for accepting bribes and electoral fraud on Monday.

Zheng was also fined 200,000 yuan (around 29,000 U.S. dollars), and his illicit gains shall be turned over to the state treasury, said the Intermediate People's Court of Zibo City in Shandong Province.

Zheng was formerly deputy head of the Liaoning Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee.

The people's procuratorate of Zibo City in east China's Shandong Province accused Zheng of interfering in an electoral processes from October 2012 to January 2013.

Prosecutors alleged that Zheng bribed deputies to the provincial people's congress and other officials with mobile phones worth about 156,000 yuan to gain votes.

The court decided to be lenient as Zheng pleaded guilty, expressed remorse, returned his gains and offered information about other crimes.
