Companies in Beijing’s Zhongguancun, a science and technology hub in the Chinese capital, saw their total revenue reach 4.6 trillion yuan (aboutUS$677 billion) in 2016, up by 2.1 trillion yuan from that of 2012.

In September of 2016, China’s State Council released a plan to build Beijing into a national sci-tech innovation center, identifying Zhongguancun as a major player in the course. Currently, new strategic industrial clusters contribute 71.6 percent of Zhongguancun’s total revenue, speeding up the formation of a “high-end, sophisticated and advanced” economic structure.

Zhongguancun has seen its influence increased at home and abroad. In 2016, the turnover of technology contracts in Zhongguancun reached 306.75 billion yuan, nearly 80 percent of which involved companies outside of Beijing. Among the over 300 listed companies in Zhongguancun, three fourths of their revenue was generated outside of Beijing, and the amount of total revenue reached 1.6 trillion yuan. Over 700 industry leaders have set up R&D centers or branches overseas, and more than 100 companies are listed in the overseas market.

According to an official with the Zhongguancun Science Park, Zhongguancun will pay more attention to nurturing industrial clusters with leading technology. Meanwhile, the innovation hub will pursue development projects with high-end and differentiated characteristics.
