Beijing drafted earlier this year an overall urban plan for 2016 to 2030, charting the future course for the city’s continuing prosperity and a better urban life for citizens in the Chinese capital.

Beijing’s officials recently held a meeting to study the plan.

Officials said that the key to manage the metropolis is to relocate its non-capital functions. Beijing needs to push forward innovation-driven development. It will also optimize its urban structure by readjusting its land usage and add more green space. Officials added that Beijing will vigorously develop its sub-center as well as support the neighboring Xiongan New Area.

The blueprint emphasizes the city’s status as China’s political, cultural, international exchange and sci-tech innovation center. Beijing will strengthen the protection of its heritage sites and old town, pushing ahead the protection and utilization of the Great Wall culture belt, Western Hills culture belt and Grand Canal culture belt. The Chinese capital will also build up its capacity as the center of international exchange in the wake of the recently concluded Belt and Road high-level forum, especially in its facilities and capacity building. Meanwhile, Beijing will also build itself into China’s science and technology center of global influence, with the focus on the Zhongguancun Science City, the Huairou Science City, the Future Science City as well as the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area.

Officials stressed the need to enhance Beijing’s urban management in a more refined and law-based way, and pledged to strictly implement the city plan once it is approved by state authorities.
