Police in southern China's Guangdong Province Thursday said they had busted more than 130 gangs and arrested about 1,420 suspects in a huge crackdown on organized crime.

The police began preparing the anti-gang operation in the first half of the year by probing gangs accused of terrorizing local people over issues including land leases, construction, private lending and mining.

The operation was commanded by the Ministry of Public Security, and massive arrests started late September. More than 90 of those arrested were suspects previously known to the police.

The suspects were accused of crimes, including robbery, assault, organizing gambling, forced business transaction, disturbance of public order and gun crimes, according to police.
