Shawn Newsam, associate professor at the University of California at Merced, said he was surprised by the rapid development of artificial intelligence in China while attending the National Postdoctoral Academic Forum in Hengqin New Area, held from Dec. 19 to 21, 2017.
Newsam was invited to give a speech on geographic knowledge discovery using ground-level images and videos at the First International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analysis during the forum.
He said that he had meaningful conversations with Chinese researchers at the workshop and noted the achievements the country had made in artificial intelligence, adding that China has become a global leader in the area.
Newsam's research focuses on geographic study based on photos and videos collected through social media. He said the ground-level images offer perspectives different from aerial photos, and the frame for analysis of such images can be applied in civil purposes, including monitoring urban environments.
