South China's Guangdong Province aims to cut coal consumption by 20 million tonnes by 2020 to improve its energy structure and fight pollution, the provincial environment protection department said on Thursday.
Half the reduction will be enforced in the Pearl River Delta, with a large number of manufacturers, the department said.
The reduction will help the province meet its target of limiting coal consumption to 160 million tonnes by 2020.
Guangdong will expand the use of nuclear, wind and solar power to replace fossil fuel use. By 2020, the non-fossil fuel consumption will be no less than 26 percent, it said.
