Eight people were confirmed dead and three others injured Friday after the top of a lounge bridge in east China's Zhejiang Province collapsed, local authorities said.
The upper part of the lounge bridge in Langgan village in Tonglu County, Hangzhou City, collapsed at about 7:40 p.m., the county government said.
The collapse was caused by severe weather, local authorities said early Saturday.
Meteorological data showed that winds of up to 88 km per hour hit the county when the incident happened.
Eyewitnesses told Xinhua that it was stormy weather at the time of the accident and some villagers were resting and taking shelter from the rain in the lounge.
Earlier the injured were sent to the county's No. 2 people's hospital for emergency treatment.
Most of the people trapped inside the toppled structure were the elderly, and they were in serious conditions, said the eyewitnesses.
Further investigation is under way.
