Beijing is planning to comprehensively upgrade its suburban railways this year.
According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport, the city has set tasks for its three suburban railways - Line S2, the Huairou-Miyun line, and the sub-center line. Specifically, the entire Huairou-Miyun line will open on April 30, terminating at Gubeikou Station; additional trains will be launched on Line S2 to serve the upcoming Expo 2019 Beijing; and the sub-center line linking urban Beijing and Tongzhou district will be strengthened to improve its connection with other public transportation facilities.
Development of the city's suburban railways will better serve commuters going from the capital's central areas to the suburban areas outside 5th Ring Road, said an official at the Municipal Commission of Transport.
China Railway Beijing Group currently operates all three suburban railways, but currently the number of running trains is inadequate, said the official. Beijing's transportation authority said the city will further improve efficiency by raising train speed, increasing the number of trains during peak hours, and shortening departure intervals this year.
As the first suburban railway in China, Line S2 has become a transit corridor from Beijing's central areas to Yanqing district in the city's northwestern part, and effectively brought in tourists along the route. In 2018, the transit line carried 2.23 million passengers, averaging 6,109 passengers per day. It has clearly proven to be an essential part of Beijing's public transit.
This year, Line S2 will soon launch a direct train to Expo 2019 Beijing. Moreover, the running schedule will be adjusted to 14 pairs a day from Tuesday to Thursday, and 18 pairs a day from Friday to Monday as well as on holidays.
Since the Qingming Festival in 2017, Line S2 has placed transit guides on weekends and during holiday rush hours at the departure station Huangtudian. This year, the transit guides will be present daily. Besides, during Expo 2019 Beijing, the guides can be found at Zhuxinzhuang, Beianhe, Tiantongyuanbei, Jinanqiao, Xierqi, Liuliqiaodong, and other stations that connect to the expo area. Guides at Huangtudian, Badaling, and Yanqing stations will also extend their working hours. Meanwhile, shuttle bus service will be available at the Yanqing terminal station to take passengers directly to the expo park.
For the sub-center line, shuttle buses will be launched this year in Beijing Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station, thus enabling passengers to commute between Tongzhou district and urban Beijing more conveniently.
For the Huairou-Miyun line, it will start from Huairou Science City, run through Heishansi Station, and end in Gubeikou Station, with the total running time of 64 minutes. The line will not only provide commute options around Huairou Science City, but also make the abundant tourist locations in Huairou and Miyun districts more accessible.
