Constructions of the Beijing Daxing Airport Expressway and the Beijing Daxing Airport North Line Expressway (Middle Section), two important supporting projects of the Chinese capital's new airport, are expected to complete by the end of June. When the two roads are put to use, the drive time from the South 5th Ring Road to the airport will be shortened to 20 minutes.
The eight-lane Beijing Daxing Airport Expressway starts from the South 5th Ring Road and ends at the north boundary of the airport, with a total length of 27 kilometers. According to Zhang Yanduo, GM assistant and director of the Construction Management Department of the Beijing Investment Transportation Co., 86% of the road is built on viaducts.
"In order to ensure the safety of high-speed traffic and enhance the driving experience, the 23-kilometer bridge deck of the Beijing Daxing International Airport Expressway is made of ice- and-snow-melting materials," Zhang said. The materials would bring down the freezing point of the road to about minus 12 degrees Celsius, helping reduce the impact of inclement weather on the road. Meanwhile, the use of conventional ice-melting agents is greatly reduced, thus protecting the environment and bridge structure.
According to Zhang, the new airport expressway will make use of information technologies such as cloud computing and big data to become the first smart highway in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. It will utilize a mobile-internet-based toll system and a smart management system integrating monitoring systems, big data intelligence analysis, simulation deduction, and electronic sandbox.
According to Gao Xiaohui, deputy chief engineer of the contractor, the Beijing Daxing Airport North Line Expressway (Middle Section) is the only east-west expressway within the Beijing Daxing Airport transport network, which includes four expressways and three railways. Spanning 24.58 kilometers, the expressway makes it faster to reach Beijing-Taipei Expressway from Beijing-Kaifeng Expressway by connecting the two with Daxing Airport Expressway. Meanwhile, it will mitigate traffic congestions on the 6th Ring Road in southern Beijing.
Gao added that the extension of the expressway will link Beijing-Xiongan Expressway and Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway on the west and connect Langfang-Zhuozhou Expressway and Capital Area Loop Expressway on the east in Hebei province. The completion of the extensions will help establish a "one-hour-traffic rim around Beijing" by linking downtown Beijing with Tianjin, Baoding, and Langfang.
