Beijing's Yizhuang will receive 5G coverage throughout the district and carry out 5G-enabled driverless vehicle testing, the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA or Yizhuang Development Area) announced at a press conference Thursday.

The district's authorities also unveiled a plan to invite innovative startups to participate in the building of a 5G city, with the aim of promoting the development of high-end technology and pushing forward the application of scientific and technological advances.

To further promote the new energy vehicles, Yizhuang is ramping up efforts to develop applications of key technologies, including automatic parking, charging facilities, urban traffic management, and driverless cars.

A trial platform built in Yizhuang named "V2X" offers vehicle-to-everything communication for vehicle manufacturers, through services including the 5G network, 5G edge computing platform, and 5G-based location service. The 12 kilometer-long V2X road is the world's first connected vehicle system with reversible lanes, which enables companies and research institutes from all over the world to test their driverless vehicles and smart transportation technologies. There are 24 other trail roads for testing driverless vehicles, with a combined length that accounts for 70% of all roads in Beijing. Yizhuang is also expected to open an additional area of around 40 square kilometers for testing driverless vehicles.

Yizhuang now has over 200 5G base stations, and is expected to cover the whole area with 5G network by the end of 2019. In addition, about 30 companies working on 5G technology are located in Yizhuang, covering the fields of chip, base station, antenna, detection and verification, and terminal application.

According to the officials of BDA, Yizhuang plans to invest in researching and developing the mobile internet, the internet of things, cloud computing, and big data, and promote the integration between 5G technology and transportation, healthcare, the environment, and other public services. And infrastructure construction of 5G technologies, service platforms, and data sharing platforms will also be accelerated.

In addition to becoming a 5G city, the next step for Yizhuang is to build itself into a "zero waste" city.
