The Luohu district government held a biweekly news conference on ecological and environmental protection on May 29 to commemorate World Environment Day on June 5.
In the news conference, Tang Xiangliang, chief of the Luohu District Environmental Protection Bureau, introduced the district's pollution control efforts.
Last year, the annual density of PM2.5, tiny particles or droplets in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width, in Luohu was 22.6 micrograms per cubic meter, the lowest among its peers.
The main sources of air pollution in Luohu are automobile emissions, industrial pollution, construction site dust, and cooking emissions.
The district attaches great significance to addressing sources of air pollutants, and the efforts have paid off.
The Luohu government also published the first ecological map in Shenzhen, showing the ecological resources in its jurisdiction, including forest, green land, and distribution of animal and plant resources.
According to the map, Luohu's major ecological preservation zones include Yinhu Mountain, Buxin Mountain, Shenzhen Reservoir, Xianhu Botanic Park, Wutong Mountain, Weiling Park, Honghu Park, Cuizhu Park, People's Park, and Culture Park.
The biodiversity and picturesque landscape of Luohu are remarkable.
Tang said that Luohu has reserved about half of its territory for ecological preservation areas. The district's forest coverage rate has reached 51.86%, and 64.6% of the district's urban area is green space.
The water quality in the Wutong Mountain scenic area and the Shenzhen Reservoir has been kept at a high level for decades, during which they serve as one of the sources of drinking water for residents in Shenzhen and the neighboring Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).
In addition, 20 rivers flow through Luohu, among which the Shenzhen River is one of the five largest rivers of the city with its catchment area reaching 171.41 square kilometers. Luohu pays special attention to protecting the water quality of the river.
Luohu has 129 parks, and the average urban green space per person is about 16.87 square meters.
Also, Luohu is the most important animal and plant resource repository of Shenzhen. There are two major plant species resource protection centers for orchid and cycad plants in the district.
Luohu has conducted a series of pollution control campaigns to ensure air, water, and environmental pollution is effectively treated.
