Huang Yiling, head of the back-end development of the program and also a computer science and technology student of NUPT, said that the program, which took them one month to develop, allows graduates to choose gowns and hats to create their own graduation photos and send links via WeChat to invite friends to "take" a group photo with a selection of campus landmarks backgrounds.
"On the first day of launch on June 9, the program attracted more than 100,000 visitors from many universities. So far, the traffic has exceeded 500,000," Huang said, hoping that this easy-to-use program can help alleviate the graduates' disappointment of not being able to shoot a graduation photo.
Online graduation exhibition
Each year, schools often celebrate the achievements of graduating art and design students by organizing exhibitions of their work. In 2020, many schools made online graduate shows for the first time.
The Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University developed an online system for graduates to exhibit their thesis works. Starting from June 12, over 1,000 works of 282 undergraduates and 167 master graduates were uploaded online.
Lu Xiaobo, dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, said that the virtual exhibition shows not only the graduates' professional competence but also the achievements of the half year's online education.
"During special graduation season, without grand opening ceremony and huge crowds, the graduates' passion hasn't waned one bit," Dong Shubing, director of department of sculpture of the Academy, said in a message to graduates.
Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), one of the most prestigious art academies in China, also launched a virtual art gallery for graduates to display their achievements.
The "Then & Now: 2020 CAFA Online Graduation Season" gallery presents more than 10,000 graduation works of 31 doctoral students, 375 master students, and 846 undergraduates in 9 virtual galleries. According to the data of CAFA Network Center, the virtual gallery received 2.13 million visits on the launch day of May 20.
Liu Junwei, a postgraduate of CAFA, majoring in printmaking, believed that although the virtual graduation show is a substitute due to the coronavirus outbreak, it posed unique challenges and opportunities for students and teachers. "It will help promote the graduates' work," Liu said.
