The Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau announced on Sept. 13 that as of the end of August 2020, Beijing had promoted the use of more than 350,000 pure electric vehicles, including 70,600 in the public sector (including 12,500 public buses, 4,500 sanitation vehicles, and 9,900 taxis), accounting for about 10% all electric vehicles in the country.
According to Lian Aiping, an official from the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau, Beijing continues to popularize the use of electric vehicles and optimize vehicles and non-road mobile technologies. In addition, Beijing has also scaled up efforts to develop its urban freight rail network.
Data shows that the proportion of Beijing's cargo arrival and departure via rail reached 8.8%, an increase of 1.4% over the same period in 2019. By the end of August 2020, the number of motor vehicles in Beijing had reached 6.53 million (including 240,000 heavy diesel vehicles) and non-road mobile machinery 40,000-60,000.
"Mobile source accounts for 45% of all local PM2.5 pollution," said Lian, adding that Beijing will in the future work to strengthen cooperation with neighboring Tianjin and Hebei to create an information-sharing platform to track excessive emissions. Additionally, it will introduce incentive policies for emission reduction and roll out stricter traffic management measures.
Lian added that Beijing will ramp up efforts in emission reduction in the transportation and energy sectors, work to reduce gasoline and diesel consumption, and explore the establishment of a vehicle carbon emissions trading mechanism for key industries.
