China has secured major strategic achievements in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic, including a decisive victory in Wuhan, once the hardest-hit area in the country, in just three months. The frontline health workers played a crucial role in this victory, a fact that has not been overlooked. As such, a special fund was launched by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) at the former residence of Madame Soong, wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, in Beijing on Dec. 2 to give support to the children and relatives of those who died in the line of duty in Hubei province.
The special fund of 8 million yuan (around US$1.2 million) was donated by Erdos Group, China's popular cashmere brand.
In return, Jing Dunquan, vice-president of the CSCLF, awarded a certificate of honor to the company. Song Jian, director of the Fund Department under CSCLF, said that she hoped that the special fund will help the development of China's public welfare undertakings.
Lu Weidong, secretary of the party committee of Erdos Group, said that the fund will be used to providing long-term support to the families of medical staff and public officials who have made major contributions to the country and the people during the fight against the epidemic.
A total of 13 medical staff and 16 public officials died either in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic or at their post in Hubei province. Between them, they left 39 behind. The special fund will be used to provide long-term education aid to these children through to university graduation. Additionally, a scholarship will be set up to encourage those with outstanding performance and aspirations to study medicine. Supermodel Liu Wen, a spokesperson for Erdos, also wrote the children a message and sent a warm New Year gift to convey her sincerest wishes.
During the launch ceremony, Duan Yongwei from the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, shared his personal story with the audience of delivering nucleic acid test samples during the initial and most dangerous months of the epidemic.
