On March 23, 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward a major global concept in his speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, calling for joint efforts to build a global community forged by a common destiny, where each person has a stake in the other.
President Xi expounded on the vision in his keynote speech at the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva titled "Work Together to Build a Community with Shared Future for Mankind" in January 2017. "All countries should jointly shape the future of the world, write international rules, manage global affairs and ensure that development outcomes are shared by all," he said.
This vision embodies the ideas of building an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity. It answers the major question of how the international community should face a period of turbulence and change that is characterized by increased fragmentation in response to salient risks and challenges.
It was endorsed by the UN and written into several UN resolutions including Resolution 2344 related to promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the surrounding region, as well as two resolutions by the UN Human Rights Council on "Question of the realization in all countries of economic, social and cultural rights" and "Right to food."
China has been taking a multi-pronged approach to translate this grand vision into practice.
