The nomination for the 2021 Election Committee's subsector ordinary elections began on Friday and will last for seven days to Thursday in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Multiple persons submitted their relevant forms at the HKSAR government complex on Friday.

John Lee Ka-chiu, chief secretary for administration of the HKSAR government and chairman of the Candidate Eligibility Review Committee (CERC), said the committee will carefully review the eligibility of every relevant person to ensure that those, who do not truly uphold the HKSAR Basic Law and bear allegiance to the HKSAR, will not be let in.

A nominee must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 18 or above, who is a registered voter for the relevant Election Committee subsector or has a substantial connection with that subsector.

A nomination form must be subscribed by not less than five voters registered for the Election Committee subsector concerned. Each voter may subscribe multiple nominations regarding a particular Election Committee subsector but the number should not exceed the number of Election Committee members to be elected by that subsector.

The Electoral Affairs Commission appointed last month Returning Officers for various subsectors to receive nomination forms for their respective subsectors and to handle other electoral duties.

The CERC also requests each candidate to complete and return the Candidate Eligibility Review Supplementary Information Form.

A decision on improving the electoral system of the HKSAR was endorsed by an overwhelming majority vote at the fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress on March 11.

According to the decision, the Election Committee, expanded to 1,500 members of five sectors, shall be responsible for electing the Chief Executive designate and part of the members of the Legislative Council (LegCo), as well as for nominating candidates for the Chief Executive and LegCo members.

The Election Committee's subsector elections will be held on Sept. 19.
