A farmers' art festival was held Sunday to celebrate the fall harvest in Lipao village, Badaling town of northwestern Beijing's Yanqing district, approximately 90 minutes' drive from downtown Beijing.
Besides enjoying the gala performance, visitors could also take a walk through the local orchards as the large, red apples are ready to be picked at this season. Due to the large temperature difference between day and night as well as the high altitude, apples grown in the village are succulent and crispy with a sweet and sour taste.
With a history of over 30 years of growing apples, the plantations in Lipao village cover an area of 80 hectares and produce 13 million kg every year. "The village is welcoming another harvest this fall," said Li Qin, a member of the Lipao Village Committee, yesterday.
Lipao is one of the best places to visit in Beijing during fall. Fruit-picking aside, visitors can also trek along the Great Wall as the village lies at the foot of the Badaling section.
Yanqing is a popular summer retreat in Beijing as well as the city's agricultural base, with 2,000 hectares of apple orchards. In addition, the district is one of the three venues for the upcoming 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
