China's central bank began issuing a set of commemorative coins last month to celebrate the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The commemorative set, all legal tender in China, consists of 12 coins – four gold, six silver, and two copper-alloy – with denominations ranging from 10,000 yuan (US$1,566) to five yuan.
All of the gold and silver coins bear the official emblem of the 2022 Winter Olympics and are emblazoned with the country's name and year of issuance on the obverse, with decorative images of the Great Wall and snowflakes. The reverse is inscribed with different designs including the Games’ mascots and various ice and snow sports.
The two copper-alloy coins, valued at five yuan each, have also been released to the public under equivalent conversion. Citizens who placed preorders can visit designated bank branches between Nov. 18-24 to collect the coins.
The obverse sides of the two coins both feature the emblem of the Winter Olympics, alongside the country's name, year of issuance, and images of the Great Wall and snow-capped mountains.
The reverse sides show images of a short-track speed skater and an alpine skier, respectively, as well as the Chinese characters for the "24th Winter Olympics."
