China will make efforts to ensure the prevention and control of COVID-19 during the 2022 Spring Festival travel rush, according to a State Council executive meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang on Wednesday.

The meeting urged efforts to ensure orderly travel based on COVID-19 risk levels during the travel season, which will last from mid-January to late February.

Requirements on the sterilization of public venues, body-temperature checks and wearing face masks should be fulfilled, said the meeting, while the transportation of necessities and safe travel should also be guaranteed.

The meeting went on to decide on relieving the financial burden of those who pay individual income tax, extending three preferential policies until the end of 2022 or the end of 2023. These extensions are expected to reduce taxes by a total of 110 billion yuan (about 17.3 billion U.S. dollars) per year.

In terms of ensuring education equality, Wednesday's meeting called for boosting the ranks of rural teachers through various measures, including enhancing their pay.

Efforts should be made to provide long-term housing for teachers in rural areas, bolster training and academic education for them, as well as encourage outstanding teachers to work in rural schools on a rotating basis.

The meeting also urged concrete moves to ensure equal education for the children of migrant workers and make it easier for them to take the high school entrance exam in their cities of residence.
