Baiyun Mountain, the "lung of Guangzhou," is located in the northeast of the city, south China's Guangdong province. Going to Baiyun Mountain for fresh air has become one of the most popular ways for Guangzhou residents to embrace nature. Ms. Wu is one of them. "On weekends and holidays, I would invite family and friends to climb Baiyun Mountain together. It's so refreshing to walk in the forest."
Excellent or good air quality days account for 92.5% of the total at Baiyun Mountain, where the average concentration of negative oxygen ions is more than 2,000 per cubic centimeter, with the highest being more than 9,000. Guangzhou launched the construction of "urban ecological oxygen bars" at the end of 2021, and Baiyun Mountain was rated the city's first urban ecological oxygen bar by a unanimous decision by a panel of experts.

Improving the quality of ecological spaces
Today's Guangzhou has a forest coverage rate of 41.91%, a forest stock volume of 21.02 million cubic meters, a green coverage rate of 40% in built-up areas and a per capita park green area of 17.33 square meters. The municipal forest parks, built in ecologically important locations and enjoying excellent forest and landscape resources, are an important barrier for Guangzhou's ecological security and play an important role in Guangzhou's economic and social development and its promotion of ecological civilization.
Take Conghua District as an example. According to Zhang Li, a level II principal staff member of the Guangzhou municipal government's Forest Chiefs Office, Conghua District has strengthened the protection, management and ecological restoration of the ecological resources in all its nature reserves, and nature reserve forest chiefs are appointed to the district's 27 nature reserves, forest parks, wetland parks and scenic spots.
"The air quality here has ranked among the best in the Pearl River Delta for many years, and the forest coverage rate is stable at about 69%. The water quality of the section of the Liuxi River, Guangzhou's mother river, in Conghua has been consistently above Class II," says Zhang Li, who describes the efforts at her district as typical of all districts in Guangzhou seeking an innovative approach in the forest chiefs' responsibilities.
