Promoting the high-standard construction of South China National Botanical Garden
Among the many ecological landmarks in Guangzhou, the South China National Botanical Garden has attracted the most attention. On July 11, 2022, the South China National Botanical Garden was officially unveiled.
One of the world's richest countries in plant diversity, China is home to more than 37,000 species of higher plants, accounting for about one-tenth of the world's total. The establishment of the South China National Botanical Garden will bring significant benefits to the promotion of ecological civilization, ex-situ conservation, popular science education and the cultivation of relevant talents in Guangzhou, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even the whole of Guangdong province. Based on the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the South China National Botanical Garden has a planned core functional area of 319 hectares. It is the first national botanical garden in South China and an important part of the country's national botanical garden system.
The South China National Botanical Garden, originally the Institute of Agriculture, Forestry and Botany at National Sun Yat-sen University and set up in 1929, is one of China's oldest botanical research and protection institutions. It tasks itself with the conservation of biodiversity at the same latitude as the garden and is committed to the conservation, scientific research and knowledge dissemination of tropical and subtropical plants. It was named China's best botanical garden in 2019. Over its rich history of more than 90 years, the South China National Botanical Garden has covered all plant types in South China in its ex-situ conservation programs, has earned extensive international influence in plant research and has been playing a significant role in international plant protection organizations.

In the blueprint for the South China National Botanical Garden, Guangzhou will take advantage of its strength as a national central city and an international metropolis and its superior natural conditions and rich biodiversity resources to support the garden's growth. At the same time, it will also focus on the combined display of knowledge about tropical plants in South Asia and Lingnan garden culture to improve the display of Lingnan garden culture and horticulture, advance popular science education, tell the Chinese plant story well, highlight the charm of Chinese culture and biodiversity and support the climb of the green industry in the Greater Bay Area on the value chain.
The high-standard construction of the South China National Botanical Garden will help promote the protection and utilization of plant resources in Guangzhou and inject great impetus into the city's model of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in the context of modernization.
