Advancing wetland protection and ecological restoration

Since Guangzhou has been committed to creating a green, beautiful city on wetlands, the implementation of urban ecological restoration projects is a major task of the city's government. From Baiyun Mountain to Haizhu Wetland, Guangzhou has been steadily promoting the ecological restoration of its core urban green spaces.

"Since 2011, we have led the design of such projects as Haizhu Wetland Ecological Restoration, Haizhu Wetland Quality Improvement and Haizhu Green Waterside Roads," says Li Qing, head of Guangzhou Landscape Architecture Design & Research Institute under Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group. All human intervention against wetland erosion is centered on nature-based solutions, according to Li Qiang, who says that during the restoration process, the ecological environment of Haizhu Wetland has improved significantly, as is seen in its water quality, rich biodiversity and carbon sink capacity. Haizhu National Wetland Park was honored with the Dubai International Best Practices Award for Sustainable Development in Urban Regeneration and Public Spaces. Selected as one of 18 wetlands of international importance on World Wetlands Day, Feb. 2, 2023, the wetland is the only national wetland park in China listed on the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas.

In recent years, Guangzhou has continued to promote the ecological restoration of mangroves, wetland parks, and wetland protection zones, completing a restoration area of 3,800 hectares. With 25 wetland parks (including two national wetland parks) and 32 wetland protection zones, the city has formed a wetland protection system with wetland parks as the main body and wetland protection zones, nature reserves, and forest parks as the auxiliary parts. In the future, Guangzhou will carry on its wetland protection and ecological restoration, vigorously carrying out biodiversity protection projects and promoting the formation of a green, low-carbon and frugal model of high-quality green development.

In February 2023, the Guangzhou Afforestation Committee specified the goal of the Green Beauty Guangzhou Five-Year Action Plan (2023-2027): Guangzhou will improve and increase a forested area of 667 million square meters by 2027. As Guangzhou pursues its ecological protection goals, its sky will be bluer, its mountains greener and its water clearer. A green and beautiful tomorrow where people and nature coexist in harmony is beckoning to Guangzhou.
