U.K. professor Alessio Patalano outlined his hopeful outlook on the potential of the ongoing 10th Beijing Xiangshan Forum to foster international security cooperation under the framework of the China-proposed Global Security Initiative.
"At the moment, we have an understanding of the general ambitions of the Global Security Initiative revolving around greater resilience in international stability," said Alessio Patalano, a professor of war and strategy in East Asia at King's College in London, while speaking to China.org.cn at the 10th Beijing Xiangshan Forum.
He emphasized that the forum also presents an opportunity to delve into the details of effectively proposing the implementation of the Global Security Initiative.
"The participants at the forum can actually have an opportunity to reflect and then start to think about how different countries can join and support the Global Security Initiative," said Patalano.
Patalano believes that China possesses the international capacity to influence how global security is shaped, and whether such influence could extend further. He noted that China's longstanding efforts in promoting infrastructural development and strengthening connectivity among the Belt and Road partner countries are significant steps towards fostering prosperity and lasting peace globally.
He also mentioned that without lasting peace, long-term sustainable development is unachievable. In this regard, China has demonstrated a clear commitment to this vision for over a decade. He added that the forum offers a platform for attendees to engage with their counterparts in addressing international security issues.
Themed "Common Security, Lasting Peace," the 10th Beijing Xiangshan Forum is being held from Oct. 29 to 31 at the Beijing International Conference Center. The forum has welcomed official delegations from more than 90 countries and international organizations. Additionally, over 200 experts from more than 50 countries and regions have been invited to participate. Besides four plenary sessions and eight group sessions, the forum also organized special seminars such as "Sun Tzu's Art of War and Current International Security Challenges" and "China's Role in Maintaining Asia-Pacific Security," alongside coordinating insightful visit activities.
