The 2023 World Young Scientist Summit (WYSS) was held in Wenzhou city, Zhejiang province, from Nov. 9 to 12. 

Themed "Converging the World's Talents, Creating a Better Future," the summit has been held annually since 2019. Centering around the topic of "Strengthening Innovation Among Youth for a Sustainable Future," the 2023 session comprised 13 forums, gathered four winners of the Nobel Prize, 37 academicians, and 850 scientists and entrepreneurs from China and abroad. The attendees gathered to exchange ideas in science and technology, enhance cooperation in innovation, and seek solutions to global challenges.

This year, for the first time, the Young Scientist Sustainable Development Goals Award was established by the summit to acknowledge young scientists who have made remarkable contributions to the goals. A total of 80 young scientists from 35 countries and regions had submitted applications, with three being chosen after meticulous appraisals by a review committee formed by 11 internationally renowned experts. The winners, including Henry Snaith from Oxford University, Lou Xiongwen from City University of Hong Kong, and Zhang Qiang from Tsinghua University, were awarded during the opening ceremony for their contributions to perovskite-based photovoltaic cells, the synthesis of nano-structured materials and their applications, and lithium bond chemistry and the utilization of electrochemical energy storage, respectively. Each will receive a reward of one million yuan (approximately $137,000).

As a prelude to the summit, the WYSS European Event was held in Brussels, Belgium, from Oct. 17 to 18. Jointly organized by the WYSS Secretariat and the Association of Chinese-European Innovation and Entrepreneurship (ACEIE), the European Event attracted over 60 esteemed scientists and entrepreneurs to deliver speeches, attend panel discussions, and make project roadshows at the main venue, sub-venues, and during roundtable dialogues. They focused on topics such as youth and future, innovation and inheritance, development, and responsibility. During the event, five European organizations signed cooperative agreements with WYSS and ACEIE, paving the way to encourage more youth to participate in global governance on science and technology.

During the Youth Climate Action Forum and Global Roundtable for Young Scientist Scholars held on Nov. 11, one of the forums of the 2023 WYSS, an important plan entitled the "Visit China Plan" was launched. Initiated and implemented by the China Association for International Science and Technology Cooperation, the plan aims to invite young global scientists, representatives of science organizations, and science entrepreneurs to visit China. The visiting activities are expected to enhance communication between science communities, promote the sharing and application of technological achievements, explore ways of addressing global issues like climate change, the green economy, and low-carbon transport, and make contributions to the development of SDGs, according to the forum. 

Jointly sponsored by the China Association for Science and Technology and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, the WYSS has become an important platform to enable young scientists to learn from each other and achieve their dreams.
