February marked the 10th anniversary since the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region was elevated to a national strategy. A press conference was held Tuesday to highlight the achievements of regional coordination over the past decade.
"Overall, the past 10 years have been focused on laying a solid foundation and establishing a strategic layout for the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, emphasizing the adjustment and optimization of economic and spatial structures," said Guo Lanfeng, a member of the Communist Party of China Leadership Group of the National Development and Reform Commission, during the conference.
In 2023, the total GDP of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region reached 10.4 trillion yuan ($1.4 trillion), which is 1.9 times that of 2013 in current prices, according to recent data released by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics. Along with the increase in total output, the industrial structures of the three regions have also continuously upgraded, with the proportion of the tertiary industry increasing by 9.6 percentage points.
The region has seen an increase in collaborative innovation. In 2022, research and development expenditure within the region reached 426.09 billion yuan, 2.2 times that of 2013. Additionally, the region has accumulated over 1,400 "little giant" enterprises with specialized and sophisticated technologies mainly distributed in manufacturing, scientific research and technical services, and information transmission, software, and information technology services.
There have also been breakthroughs in the collaborative development of industrial chains within the area. Since May 2023, Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province have jointly mapped out six industrial chain diagrams, aiming to accelerate the integration of regional innovation chains, industrial chains and supply chains.
Over the past decade, ecological collaborative governance has achieved remarkable results, and air quality within the region has continuously improved. "In 2023, the average concentration of PM2.5 in the region decreased by nearly 60% compared to 2014," Guo said.
Simultaneously, progress is being made in optimizing the region's spatial structure. "The starting point and ultimate goal of the coordinated development of the region is to relieve the non-capital functions of Beijing," Guo underscored at the conference.
According to recent data, significant advancements have been made in this regard, with over 80 million square meters of illegal construction demolished in the central urban area and more than 6,000 hectares of land released.
The capital's sub-center, Tongzhou district, is experiencing significant growth, with a regional GDP of 130.36 billion yuan in 2023, 2.2 times that of 2013 in current prices. Additionally, Xiong'an New Area has commenced large-scale construction, focusing on relieving Beijing's non-capital functions.
