March 12 marks China's 46th Arbor Day, a national day dedicated to tree planting and environment protection. This year's celebration comes on the heels of a significant year for Chinese reforestation efforts, with significant progress made in key areas.

According to a report released on Tuesday by the National Afforestation Committee, China planted a staggering 3.998 million hectares of forest in 2023. This impressive achievement demonstrates the country's commitment to combating deforestation and restoring vital ecosystems.

In addition to the massive tree planting effort, China has also implemented a series of key initiatives and programs in 2023 to promote ecological protection and sustainable development. These include 96 major projects for the protection and restoration of key national ecosystems, 25 pilot drives focused on environmental protection, and cultivation of 34,000 hectares of re-established or recently declared green spaces.

The Chinese government has provided strong policy support and financial investment for the country's greening efforts. In 2023, the central government allocated 275 billion yuan for the implementation of the national overall plan on key ecosystem conservation and restoration projects for 2021-2035 and special construction planning.
