Beijing continues to be a powerhouse of innovation in China, according to a report on Beijing's science and technology progress released on Thursday.

The report, Data on Beijing's Technological Innovation 2023, provides a comprehensive overview of Beijing's sci-tech innovation landscape, covering resources, key players, industrial development and the overall innovation environment.

The report shows the total number of sci-tech professionals in Beijing is rising, with investment in research and development (R&D) personnel increasing steadily. Beijing ranks first in the country in this regard. Beijing is home to over half of China's academicians, highlighting the city's rich reserve of sci-tech talent.

R&D funding investment in Beijing has maintained steady growth, with scientific research institutions and enterprises as the two major drivers of R&D spending. As of 2022, there were 405 R&D institutions in Beijing. Multiple entities, including research institutes, universities and high-tech enterprises, have jointly promoted the city's high-level sci-tech innovation.

Over the past decade, Beijing has rapidly shifted its industrial focus toward strategic emerging industries and high-tech sectors. The scale of high-tech industry enterprises has maintained steady growth. The report indicates that more than 40% of Beijing's industrial enterprises are actively engaged in R&D activities, mainly in new-generation information technology and the pharmaceutical and health industry — the "dual engines" of the city's high-end manufacturing sector.

The added value of technology transactions accounts for nearly 10% of regional GDP, according to the report.
