On July 22, residents of Dongle Dormitory in Shenzhen's Luohu District began using two newly installed shared elevators. Unlike traditional installations, these elevators require no upfront cost. Instead, users pay a small fee per use, ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 RMB, facilitated by AI recognition.

Dongle Dormitory, built in the 1980s, houses 24 units across seven floors, including 30 elderly and mobility-impaired residents. Funded by Shenzhen Shen Zhong Tong Li Elevator Company, the installation and maintenance are free for residents, who pay only for actual usage.

Initially free, the elevators will charge per use starting August 1. The smart system identifies users by face and body recognition, automatically deducting fees from prepaid accounts. Residents can track usage and costs via an app.

This model addresses the common funding challenges faced by older communities needing elevator installations. Previously attempted funding models were not successful due to high costs.

The shared elevator model, funded entirely by third-party companies, spreads the cost over time, making it more accessible. The operating company covers maintenance costs in exchange for revenue from elevator usage and potential advertising.

This approach reduces individual financial burden and could be a viable solution for other aging communities in Luohu District and beyond.
