Beijing will stage a lantern festival at the Beijing Garden Expo Park from Sept. 14 to Oct. 31, according to a press conference held on Thursday.

The lantern extravagance, the largest one in the city's history, is part of celebrations for the Mid-Autumn Festival and the National Day.

The festival will feature over 200 colorful lantern sets in various sizes in nine themed exhibition areas. The highlight at the event will be a blend of Beijing's culture and Zigong Lanterns, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage. Lanterns are designed from motifs inspired by Beijing's customs and festive traditions.

Designers and craftsmen have applied novel techniques and technologies to lantern making, in order to offer visitors a vibrant visual experience. For instance, the 10-meter-tall "Phoenix" lantern made of 40,000 feathers was handcrafted by over 20 lantern artisans for two months.

Additionally, the event will present more than 20 activities, including singing and dancing performances, theatrical shows, and lantern riddles.

At the event, visitors will have opportunities of learning about intangible cultural heritage, shopping for cultural and creative products, and finding culinary delights.

According to the event organizers, the lantern festival is not only a cultural feast for people in Beijing, but also an opportunity to promote the development of Beijing's cultural industry.
