Once a center of heavy industry, western Beijing's Shijingshan district is now evolving into a green district focused on high-tech sectors, driven by efforts in urban renewal and industrial transformation. The district's GDP grew by 6.3% year on year in the first half of 2024.

As one of the venues for the upcoming 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services, Shijingshan's Shougang Park will debut the Shougang No. 4 Blast Furnace as a new convention and exhibition center. Shougang park, once home to Beijing's steel industry, has now attracted over 800 enterprises and hosts major events such as the China Science Fiction Conference and the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable reuse of industrial heritage and Winter Olympic legacy.

Shijingshan district is also focusing on urban renewal by refurbishing old factories, residential buildings, and idle spaces, according to Li Xin, head of the district. Signature projects like the New Shougang Bridge, Liugonghui shopping mall, and the Winter Olympic Park have further revitalized the area.

The district is now home to over 900 national high-tech enterprises, with the digital economy contributing to 53.8% of its GDP. In the first half of 2024, high-tech and cutting-edge industries generated 162.77 billion yuan (US$22.85 billion) in revenue, up 6.2% year on year.

In addition to driving economic growth, Shijingshan has made significant strides in improving its environment and living spaces. Over the past decade, the annual average PM2.5 density in the district has dropped by 64.4%. The district was designated as a National Forest City, leading central districts in urban green coverage and per capita public green space.

In terms of cultural heritage preservation, the district's Moshikou historical and cultural block was selected for Beijing's tourism and leisure street and high-quality commercial pedestrian street project. Restoration efforts have been made at heritage sites such as Fahai Temple and Cheng'en Temple, and improvements to Badachu Park's landscape and amenities have been completed.
