Beijing has significantly expanded its network of greenways, constructing 1,515 kilometers of new paths over the past decade to enhance the city's environment for pedestrians and cyclists, city officials said Monday.
These greenways connect more than 200 parks, scenic areas and historical sites throughout the city, offering residents expanded recreational options and promoting healthier lifestyles.
"The initial idea for Beijing's greenways came from fitness trails within large parks like the Beijing Olympic Forest Park and Nanhaizi Park," said Cao Rui, deputy director of the Urban Greening Division at the Beijing Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau.
This year, the city plans to widen 169 kilometers of non-motorized vehicle lanes and add 12.7 kilometers of new lanes. Several major streets, including Deshengmen Inner Street and Zhongguancun Street, are being revamped to accommodate more pedestrians and cyclists.
Recent road repairs have prioritized pedestrian and cyclist needs, adding wider sidewalks, bike racks and improved access for people with disabilities.
