Beijing has reclaimed its leading position in China's national health index, excelling in health industry, health behavior and health facilities, according to the Tsinghua Urban Health Index 2024 report released Tuesday.

The annual evaluation categorizes cities into five tiers: leading, high-quality, average, development and catching-up levels. This year's report shows an increase in leading cities, with Beijing dominating the key indicators of health industry, health behavior and health facilities. The capital also ranks second nationally in health services, following Shanghai.

The 2024 index expanded its evaluation criteria to include five health dimensions: medical services, living behaviors, urban greening, environmental quality and health outcomes. The study expanded its sample to include 36 global metropolises from 16 countries, including 20 international metropolises such as London, New York, Paris and Singapore, alongside 16 Chinese cities. Chinese cities demonstrated strengths in health outcomes, medical services and urban greening, with Beijing's medical services ranking second globally.

Now in its fifth year, the Tsinghua Urban Health Index evaluates cities across six major indicators: health services, industries, behaviors, facilities, environments and utilities. The assessment spans 17 evaluation areas with 39 specific items, providing a comprehensive health assessment of Chinese cities.
