Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park was ranked a national leader in intellectual resources at a recent symposium. With a strong ecosystem of scientists, young talent, and serial entrepreneurs, Zhongguancun has become a hub for high-quality innovation and entrepreneurship, according to findings of the Innovative Development Research Institute of Beijing Academy of Science and Technology.

As China's first national high-tech industrial development zone and national independent innovation demonstration zone, Zhongguancun has been at the forefront of innovation for over 40 years. It is now a center for original breakthroughs, independent technological advances, and high-tech enterprises. Data from 2011 to 2020 shows Zhongguancun leads 17 global science parks in enterprise numbers, sci-tech professionals, revenue, and per capita productivity. It also boasts the best financial environment for entrepreneurship.

Zhongguancun is also home to numerous unicorn companies, which reflects the strength of its innovation ecosystem. "Beijing ranks first in China and third globally in unicorn numbers, with Zhongguancun at its heart," said Wu Wensheng, head of the Great Wall Strategy Consultants. The park now boasts a comprehensive entrepreneurship ecosystem that has attracted leading companies and assets.

Huang Lin, deputy head of the Innovative Development Research Institute, emphasized that original innovation is key to building a world-class science park. She noted that global science parks now focus on pooling scientific resources, driving industrial growth through innovation, and integrating with their cities.
