The 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum opened on Dec. 6 in Tengchong city, Yunnan province. The forum was jointly hosted by the People's Government of Yunnan Province and the China Association for Science and Technology.

More than 1,000 people attended the forum, including 120 academics from China and abroad, 59 university presidents, and leading experts, scholars and business leaders. They discussed global scientific innovation, the mission of scientists, and the role of technology in promoting high-quality development.

At the opening ceremony, Xue Qikun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from Tsinghua University, and Xie Xiaoliang, academician of the CAS, and director of the Changping Laboratory, received the 2024 Tengchong Science Award.

In addition, the Tengchong Scientists Forum Development Fund and the Yunnan Province Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Development Fund were launched to support the commercialization and industrialization of scientific and technological achievements by academicians, experts and businesses.

Experts emphasized innovation as the primary driver of development, and highlighted the forum's role as a bridge connecting scientists, educators and entrepreneurs, as well as a platform for integrating science, technology and practical applications.

The forum, held on Dec. 6-8, included an opening ceremony, a main forum, 11 subforums and nine special events. It expanded on five existing subforums, such as the University Presidents' Forum and Young Scientists' Forum, by adding six new ones, including the Biodiversity and Modern Agriculture Forum, the Life Sciences and Health Forum and the "Technology + Finance" Forum. Nine special events were organized, including the South and Southeast Asia International Intellectual Property Cooperation Workshop.

The Tengchong Scientists Forum was jointly initiated by Gu Binglin, former president of Tsinghua University, Xu Zhihong, former president of Peking University, and Rao Zihe, former president of Nankai University.
