Beijing is expected to be the top domestic tourism destination during the upcoming 2025 Spring Festival, according to a forecast report released Monday by the China Association of Travel Services and Tuniu.com, a major travel agency.
The Chinese capital also leads as the top destination for traditional cultural tourism and local getaways. The city's residents are also forecasted to travel in the largest numbers nationwide during the holiday.
Citizens in first-tier and new first-tier cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Tianjin have shown the greatest interest in Spring Festival tourism, the report says.
Spring Festival was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Dec. 4, 2024. That has sparked tourists' enthusiasm for Chinese intangible cultural heritage, making folk culture and handicraft experience activities increasingly popular, according to the report. Tourists could immerse themselves in activities such as Beijing's temple fairs, Yingge Dance in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong province, and the Guangdong Lion Dance. They can also explore exquisite handicrafts including hairpin flowers, tie-dyeing, paper cutting, and lacquer fans.
Fans of traditional culture favor cities like Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Nanjing, often booking tickets to the cities' major museums in advance, according to the report.
