Xi underlines innovation, reform in defense, military upgrade
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, on Sunday highlighted theoretical and technological innovation as the key to upgrade the country's military and national defense.

China announces 7.6% defense budget rise, lowest in six years
China on Saturday announced the country's lowest defense budget increase in six years in the wake of rising economic headwinds and last year's massive drawdown of service people.
- China will raise its defense budget by around 7 to 8 percent this year, a spokesperson for the annual session of the national legislature said Friday.
- China's top legislative body's supervision over law enforcement and government work is not a formality, a spokesperson said Friday.
- A senior Chinese military official on Wednesday called for enhanced counter-corruption efforts to build a clean army.
- China's own domestically built military cargo jet, Y-20, will likely be put into service in the army this year, a military expert said.
