QIDONG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of people in east China's Jiangsu Province took to the street early Saturday morning to protest against a Japanese company's alleged pollution discharge, a Xinhua reporter at the scene said.
People began to gather at the Yong'an Square in Qidong city about 5 a.m. to protest Oji Paper Groupa's alleged pollution discharge to nearby sea waters. The police did not interfere with the demonstration.
A Qidong municipal government spokesperson said Friday that the construction of the planned pollution discharge channel had been suspended.
The government will further investigate and evaluate the project, the spokesperson said.
The government has issued a public letter telling the local residents about the current development of the project, a move to relieve their anxiety, the spokesperson said.
The Oji Paper Group, one of Japan's largest paper manufacturing company, issued a statement on its website on Friday that the polluted water after purifying treatment conforms to the national standard. Enditem
