Tests have detected an excessive amount of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a material used to soften plastic products, in a Chinese liquor brand's products, the country's consumer quality watchdog said Wednesday.
Tests conducted Wednesday by local quality authorities found that a 50-percent alcohol distilled liquor made by Hunan-based Jiugui Liquor Co. contained a maximum of 1.04 mg of DBP per kg, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said.
The figure is higher than the 0.3 mg per kg standard, a provisional regulatory limit set by the Ministry of Health in June 2011 after it found plasticizer in food products from Taiwan the same year.
The Hunan provincial administration of quality and technological supervision, which reported the results to the AQSIQ, said its investigations carried out by late Tuesday had found no plasticizer in the liquor and no evidence that the material had been used intentionally.
The AQSIQ said the local quality authority has urged Jiugui Liquor to determine the cause of the problem and take measures to correct it.
The investigations were launched after a report appeared on www.21cbh.com on Monday. The business news website, based in south China's Guangdong Province, said tests conducted by Shanghai company Intertek showed that a Jiugui Liquor product contained 1.08 mg of DBP per kg. Endi
